Health & Fitness No.2 - Eat What You Want
Eat! It's pretty important for living apparently. As someone who loves to eat, I believe it's important to not deny yourself sustenance and pleasure. I also believe it's important to eat the food you crave. Surely you jest Andrew, I hear you say. Cravings are BAD! Well I disagree. Addiction can create issues sure, but cravings is a sign your body needs something. If you crave meat, eat it. Sugar, have something sweet. Chips, have something salty. Listen to it.
Let me say here that I am not a nutritionist or a doctor, I am speaking from my own experience and observations. As you can see by this photo, I give into my cravings A LOT!
But doesn't giving into your cravings going to make you fat? Well it depends on how you choose to respond. If you resist your cravings constantly it can cause unnatural behaviours such as binge eating, purging or satisfying them other less beneficial ways. Better to satisfy those cravings immediately, but think first what is the driver behind the cravings before you wade through an entire packet of Tim Tams.
There are two things I think about when I crave something I feel I shouldn't. Firstly, I examine what I have been eating and what I could be missing from my diet that my body needs. Sometimes I crave a beer, but I am really just thirsty and because I like beer that's what comes to mind. I might have a beer or just a glass of water depending on what I am doing, how much I have been drinking and if I feel I deserve one.
The second thing I consider is why do I crave beer? Perhaps I am a little stressed and want to relax. Instead of having that beer, I could go for a run, do some meditation or just chill out for a bit. The craving is letting me know I need something - my brain makes me think I want a beer, but perhaps it is just a sign of something else. I have noticed lately that I have been craving sugar more than usual because I have been working pretty hard and removed pleasure from other parts of my life, hence the need for this form of 'sweetness'. My action could be to have some ice cream or do something else I enjoy like visit a friend or go for a swim. The choice is mine.
So when you have a craving think about what it is my body needs. Listen to your intuition, your body talks to you, so listen. What is it asking for? It might not be the first thing that popped into your mind and there will be many ways to satisfy what your body requires. Regardless of your response, don't feel guilty about eating, food is not the enemy. Eat what you feel like, just think a little before you do. Eat what you feel like, exercise because you want too and enjoy your life.
